I nod awake
as the old coach snakes into a tunnel,
enshrouding me in darkness.
Within seconds
a pinprick of light
reveals itself at one end
and expands,
popping the train
back into daylight.
Trees flash by
bar code like,
as the train rumbles along.
In the distance,
a sea of green melts away
revealing a sand blasted countryside,
home to small rolling hills
and a lonely train station
patiently awaiting my arrival.
Soothing rattling consumes the cabin,
as iron wheels
grip steel track,
attempting to slow.
Two horn blasts
erupt from its belly,
trumpeting across the land,
sending birds scattering
into a mess of directions.
I ready my pack
as the train jerks to a halt.
A squinty eyed man in uniform
ushers me down
a rusty set of steps
and onto a
cracked cobblestone platform.
A comforting smell lingers,
as I step into warm summer air.
Aromas of farm animals
and scorched grass fields
envelope my senses,
I smile.
I hike
down a well traversed road,
littered with loose gravel,
and sides packed with dead weeds.
I look back
as the horn sounds
signaling departure,
and to say a final farewell
to a friend
whom has brought me safely
this far.
I climb, weighed down
by my pack,
to the apex
of a treacherous hill,
which resembles a giants belly
snoring in a field of dream daisies.
The late afternoon sun
has already begun its descent,
igniting the sky in a conflagration of
Wild Roses and Dandelions.
With lights absence dawning,
my steps lighten
and take hold in a charge
for my grandmothers farm house.
Lights layers unfold
to flickering lanterns,
which raise her house
from the distant shadows.
Its roof pointed
like an old gnomes hat,
signaling my arrival
with a tip.
A rickety fence,
with paint hanging off
like loose skin
hugs the grounds.
Within its grip
a lonely gate on broken hinges
creaks through quiet
as it's bullied by wind.
As I step through this magical barrier,
a familiar sensation
brushes against my mind.
I close my eyes and
inhale deep into memories,
forfeiting to an overwhelming call
of childhood love
and first kisses..........

Sinking deeper into my dreams......
Sleep deprived and restless
My eyelids softly close,
blanketing me, like a canopy over glistening stars,
unlocking a garden of swaying secrets,
into a mysterious land,
where senseless thoughts roam free with glee,
Sinking,
Deeper,
And deeper,
into my dreams.....
Pale sands perpetually lap upon a pebbled ocean,
calming the shrieks of cawing gulls.
I lay on a bed of entangled vines,
contently stretched out like an overzealous Oak,
finger tapping my cigarette, and
scattering ashes across a blank universe,
welcoming the magic to come,
Sinking deeper, into my dreams......
Through a frostbitten horizon,
enormous cascades reach down, and touch the tip of my nose,
kissing my sunburned skin.
A shiver surges throughout my inner warmth,
what an absurd thing to feel in the heart of summer.
I ponder this, as I watch an umbrella dance
across disco ball sands,
contained in a thunderstorm.
What could the color yellow be doing on my umbrella, I wonder?
A glowing fireball of the magic to come,
sinking deeper, into my dreams.......
Layers of shorts peel,
into a naked onion,
rambunctious kids playing hop scotch, stop and stare.
Rose pedals blossom from my pores,
flushing my face.
The little brats begin to laugh hysterically,
rolling around on cracked pavement,
enveloped in joy.
I press my head between bony knees,
trying to hide from scrutiny,
waiting for the magic to come,
sinking deeper, into my dreams......
Palm trees, brush stroke upon a blank canvas,
swirling colors ignite into orange and green kitchen chairs.
I begin to cry, crumbling a cheerio, kicking and screaming on my floor.
I want that cookie so badly,
mom doesn’t understand,
I hate her.
She shakes with frustration,
dropping brown curls.
Her beauty transforms,
Before me lurks a giant retro plaid spider,
She lunges on me, but doesn’t bite,
eighteen eyes engaged in deep conflict.
A soft sensation passes through my gaping mouth,
fear drifts away like exhaled smoke,
chasing the magic to come,
sinking deeper, into my dreams......
I fall through my vinyl floor,
shattering a crystal sky, and
falling into nowhere particular.
I close my eyes, relaxed.
A horrid smell drives through my senses,
I remember,
unwashed dishes and piles of heaping garbage.
I blink open my green eyes,
stretching a painful vision.
My unshaven face stares back,
contained in a mirror, gripping a bottle of gold rum.
Cigarette butts scatter themselves across a torn red carpet,
some burning, some dead.
Each swig from the chilled drink aids in healing,
covering old scars.
A tucked away picture of a tanned brunette hurts the most,
praying for the magic to come,
sinking deeper, into my dreams......
She kisses me, I feel like I have succeeded.
Her perfect hair brushes against my cheek,
releasing sweet melon and crushed coconut.
I slowly pull it back, and kiss her neck.
She says she loves me,
I want to keep her forever,
yet somehow she seems compelled to go.
Her body drifts through my fingers,
like golden sand,
Trapped within a thieving wind.
I grab at her desperately,
battling against fate,
unable to hold on,
losing myself in the magic to come,
sinking deeper, into my dreams.....
An intrusive knocking echoes from somewhere alien,
Giant hands latch onto me,
pulling me away.
I twitch,
The suns scatters golden rays through my blinds.
A melodic ringing erupts,
stirring silence.
I wearily open my eyes,
and stare into red embers flashing,
8 O’clock.
Forgetting the magic within,
sinking deeper, into my dreams........
My eyelids softly close,
blanketing me, like a canopy over glistening stars,
unlocking a garden of swaying secrets,
